La science espagnole : une science fantomatique ?

Pour la troisième séance de la saison 19, nous recevrons Juan Pimentel (Instituto de Historia, CCHS, CSIC) pour échanger autour de son ouvrage intitulé Fantasmas de la ciencia española (Marcial Pons, 2020).

L'ouvrage

This book deals with eight episodes of Spanish science in terms of certain images. It is the history with twists and turns of a ghostly presence based on equally spectral traces. Images appear and disappear, they haunt us and bring dead or submerged things back to the present. Science has been and continues to be seen as an uncertain presence, both vindicated and postponed in the context of Spanish culture. Was there science in Spain? Why is it difficult for us to see it? Like the restless dead, science strikes our unconscious and calls for a dignified funeral, a relocation to the place it deserves in memory and in our collective imagination. From the sighting of the South Sea to a recent natural historical exhibition in the Prado Museum, this book is populated by drawings, oil paintings, maps, photographs, botanical plates and microscopic prints of our past, intermittent and bright images, ghosts of Spanish science.
