Medical Knowledge, Medical Authority, and Public Interest: A Transnational Study of Itinerant Anatomy Collections in the Nineteenth Century
Thesis Supervisors: José Pardo-Tomás; Alfonso Zarzoso
This research examines popular anatomical collections that travelled across the transatlantic world in the 19th century. By analysing a series of anatomical museum catalogues and newspaper reviews of the period, the thesis aims to provide new insights into the purposes of these collections, how they varied in different national contexts, and how these contexts interacted. It seeks to demonstrate that mobile museums were important spaces in which scientists, curators, artists and model makers were publicly recognised as legitimate contributors to the production of medical knowledge. They provide a crucial perspective for better understanding the intricate interrelationships between the professional and popular spheres.
